Friends of Burleigh Knoll Conservation Park Make Their Return

Around 30 enthusiastic community members gathered under the leadership of Chris Smith, marking an exciting new chapter for this much-loved local group.

A Meaningful Beginning

The morning began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country from Clinton Brewer, grounding the event in respect and recognition of the land’s Traditional Custodians. Chris then shared his passion and vision for re-establishing the group, inspiring everyone with his commitment to caring for this unique natural oasis in the heart of suburbia.

We were also joined by John Hand, Ranger in Charge (QPWS&P Gold Coast), who spoke about the vital role Friends of Parks groups play in supporting Queensland’s protected areas. His words were a timely reminder that community stewardship truly makes a difference.

New Equipment, New Energy

A major highlight of the morning was unveiling the group’s brand-new equipment — made possible thanks to support from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. This funding ensures volunteers are well-equipped to carry out important conservation work safely and effectively.

A Community Effort

The diversity of attendees reflected just how valued Burleigh Knoll Conservation Park is. From neighbours and rangers to ecological restoration practitioners, environmental education champions, and volunteers from Friends of Tallebudgera Creek Conservation Park, the mix of experience and enthusiasm was inspiring.

It’s clear this small but significant green space holds a big place in the community’s heart.

A Special Contribution

We were also honoured to receive another generous cheque from Rusty Linnane, celebrating the milestone of 500 additional copies of his iconic Weedlings and Seedlings book. And in true Rusty style, he also gifted a very cool shirt to our Executive Officer — thank you, Rusty! 👏
