Getting Involved
The easiest way is to find a group near you and get in touch directly. Most groups welcome new volunteers at any time, and you can usually join in on a working bee or activity straight away.
Not at all. Most groups welcome people of all experience levels – whether you’re completely new or already have environmental skills. There’s always something to learn, and plenty of people happy to show you the ropes.
It depends on the group, but activities often include things like bush regeneration (weeding), planting, citizen science, wildlife monitoring, track maintenance, and educational community events.
Each group is different. Some meet monthly, others more regularly. You can choose what works for you – there’s no pressure to attend every activity.
About Friends of Parks
We’re a network that supports community groups caring for Queensland’s protected areas. Our role is to help groups get started, stay connected, and do great work on the ground. We also champion our own conservation projects, often in partnership with our member groups or other partners.
Our member groups are local Friends of Parks groups that work in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to undertake on-ground conservation or education activities in Queensland’s protected areas.
If you’re an existing or emerging volunteer-led group holding community engagement events in Queensland’s national parks, conservation parks, or state forests related to on-ground conservation, you can apply to become a member group here.
Starting a Friends Group
If there isn’t already a group in your local national park or conservation park, you can start one – and we can help. We’ll guide you through the process, connect you with the right people, and support you as your group gets established.
We provide guidance, resources, and connections to help your group get up and running. That can include advice on structure, working with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and ongoing support as your group grows.
Yes, you will need approvals from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to start a new group. There are a few things to consider, but you don’t need to figure it out alone. We’ll help you understand what’s required and support you through the process so everything is set up properly.
Locations
The majority of our member groups are located in South-East Queensland. We have additional member groups as far north as Mackay, and west into the Southern Downs. Find our member groups here.
In many cases, yes. If there isn’t a group in your area yet, that might be an opportunity to start one – we’d love to help you make that happen.
