Gold Coast Volunteer Event – Springbrook National Park Habitat Restoration & Citizen Science
Join Springbrook Weedbusters for a unique morning of conservation monitoring and habitat maintenance in one of South East Queensland’s most iconic national parks, Springbrook National Park on the Gold Coast hinterland.
Restoration work doesn’t end when the weeds are pulled or the trees are planted. Understanding whether those efforts are actually working is just as important as the work itself. That’s the idea behind the Monitoring & Maintenance Crew – or the M&M Crew – a dedicated monthly weekday morning meetup focused on tracking the long-term success of habitat restoration efforts at Springbrook National Park.
At the heart of the M&M Crew’s work is the Carricks Creek restoration site, where volunteers monitor the survival and growth of native trees planted at previous conservation events, track weed regrowth, and conduct bird surveys to gauge ecosystem health. Birds are powerful indicators of how well a habitat is recovering – and by monitoring bird activity across restoration and remnant sites over time, the group is building a picture of how Springbrook’s ecosystems are responding to community-led conservation efforts.
Whether you’re a birdwatcher, a bushcare enthusiast, a citizen science lover, or simply passionate about protecting Springbrook National Park’s world-heritage-listed environment, the M&M Crew offers a meaningful and low-intensity way to contribute to long-term conservation in one of Queensland’s most ecologically significant landscapes.
All experience levels are welcome. This is a light activity session – the only tools required are a pair of gloves. Binoculars are handy but not essential.

What to Expect
- Induction into the Monitoring & Maintenance Crew (M&M Crew)
- Two 20-minute bird surveys across restoration and remnant sites at Springbrook National Park
- Tree count and survival monitoring of native plantings at the Carricks Creek restoration site
- Light hand-weeding at the restoration site to support ongoing habitat recovery
- Insights into how bird monitoring and citizen science are used to track ecosystem health over time
What to Bring
- Enclosed, sturdy shoes
- Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt
- Hat and sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Water
- Gardening gloves
- Binoculars if you have them – not compulsory but very handy!
