Gold Coast Volunteer Event – Nerang National Park Citizen Science

Join Friends of Nerang National Park for a guided citizen science fungi walk through Nerang National Park on the Gold Coast hinterland – and help document the fascinating and often overlooked world of fungi that call this remarkable national park home.

Led by plant scientist and fungi expert Leisha Chenery, this unique morning walk offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore the forest floor of Nerang National Park in a whole new way. Leisha holds First Class Honours from the University of Queensland, where her research explored the hidden partnerships between fungi and plant roots – including mycorrhizal fungi, the extraordinary underground networks that help plants thrive. She has presented her work to the Queensland Mycological Society and brings over a decade of experience running community nature events and talks to share her passion for the fungal world with the Gold Coast community.

Together you’ll explore Nerang National Park’s native bushland, searching for and documenting fungi species as part of a real citizen science survey — contributing valuable knowledge about the wonderful diversity of species living right in our own backyards.

An ideal event for budding citizen scientists, fungi enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone curious about the hidden world beneath the forest floor. No prior experience is needed – just bring your curiosity. Spaces are strictly limited, so register early to secure your spot. This event is suitable for ages 16+, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
